SWIOTUNA proudly participated in the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenya where actively represented our regional network by speaking, facilitating, and contributing to plenary sessions, side events, and high-level discussions that shaped conversations on sustainable fisheries and ocean governance.
Here are some of the key highlights from our participation.
Serving as a panelist
1. We were part of a panelist that explored the role that coastal communities play in accelerating and scaling ocean-based climate actions – and how the global community can support these agents in building resilient coastal futures.
2. We were part of a panelist on Blue Finance in Action hosted by World Wide Fund for Nature and Sanlam, where we explored opportunities to increase investment in community-led ocean conservation and sustainable blue economy initiatives.
Moderation
1. We moderated a side event on "From Local Action to Regional Impact for 30x30: Bringing Communities and Governments Together for Inclusive Ocean Governance", hosted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Government of Tanzania, and Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association.
The discussion highlighted the importance of community leadership, equitable participation, and partnerships in achieving global conservation targets.
Side event and plenaries Participations
Throughout the conference, we actively participated in a range of side events and plenary sessions, providing opportunities to engage with global leaders, policymakers, civil society organizations, researchers, and development partners.
These engagements enabled us to share regional perspectives, contribute to discussions on sustainable fisheries and ocean governance, strengthen strategic partnerships, and identify opportunities for future collaboration.
