Blue Forests conservation and Blue Carbon Learning Exchange
SWIOTUNA participated in a Blue Forest Conservation and Blue Carbon Learning Exchange in Indonesia, which brought together regional partners to share knowledge and best practices on coastal ecosystem conservation. The event focused on strengthening collaboration across technical, financial, governance, and community aspects of blue carbon initiatives, with particular emphasis on the financial, legal, and socio-economic dimensions of sustainable coastal management. Key focus areas included: Sustainable Finance & Governance: Innovative financing models such as blended finance, seascape funding, and diversified revenue streams (e.g., tourism and sustainable enterprises), with insights from Finance Earth. Community Engagement & Benefit Sharing: Inclusive, equitable approaches that deliver tangible benefits and livelihood opportunities to local communities, drawing lessons from Kayak Asia. Legal & Institutional Frameworks: Strengthening policies, governance systems, and institutional roles to support effective implementation and scaling.
Through interactive sessions, Western Indian Ocean case studies, and field visits to Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park, participants gained practical insights into developing bankable blue carbon projects, designing inclusive benefit-sharing systems, and building sustainable, community-driven conservation models. SWIOTUNA actively contributed by sharing Kenya’s experiences, highlighting the value of community-led and locally grounded solutions. Looking ahead, the exchange is a key step toward deeper regional collaboration. SWIOTUNA is committed to applying the lessons learned across the Western Indian Ocean to advance blue forest conservation, resilient coastal ecosystems, and empowered communities.
